How to confirm the installation distance of safety light curtains?

Nowadays, light curtains are widely applied in such devices as forging machines, punching and shearing machines, elevators, subway gates, textile machinery, paper cutters and ect. In modern factories, people and machines work together. Some potentially dangerous machinery and equipment can easily cause physical injury to operators. Therefore, safety light curtains play a very important role in safe production.

 

In order to stop the machine before the human body or object reaches the dangerous area/part, the minimum distance between the light curtain and the dangerous area/part must be set is called the safety distance.

 

The center line set on the detection surface is used as the starting point to illustrate the safety distance.

 

When human body enters the detection area in a vertical direction (refer to the figure below), the safety distance can be calculated by the following formula. If it is not entered vertically, the formula will be different. Thus, please take the relevant standards of each country as reference.

S: Safety distance(mm)

K: Moving speed of the body or body part into the detection area(mm/s)

T: Total response time(seconds)(T=t1+t2)

t1: Maximum response time of light curtain

t2: Maximum time required to stop the machine after receiving the signal from the protection equipment (seconds)

C: Additional distance calculated from the diameter of the minimum detected object of the light curtain (mm)

 

Value K is the speed of the moving hands. (Usually it is the horizontal movement of the hand and arm when a person sits down). Although other values are also used, the value of 1.6m/s (63inch/s) is the one we often taken. The hand speed constant does not include other body movements that would affect the real moving speed.

Therefore, it is necessary for us to consider the optimal value including the above ones mentioned according to the actual application of the safety devices.

 

 

Ds=KxT+Dpf

Ds: Safety distance(inch)1inch=25.4mm for calculation.

K: Maximum speed for the body or body part to enter the danger area or source

T: Total time taken to stop dangerous action, or complete 1 dangerous operation of the machine

Dpf: Additional distance that varies with the minimum detected object of the light curtain. The value varies with the type of machine and the applied safety protection equipment.

S: Safety distance(mm)

K: Speed of movement for the body or body part to enter the detection area(=63inch/s)

Ts: Final stopping time required to release the stop signal to the machine (sec)

Tc: Maximum response time of the machine control system (sec)

Tr: Maximum response time of the light curtain and its interface (sec)

Dpf: Extra distance added due to the approaching factor (mm)
