Laser Displacement Sensor Installation Details

During the installation and use of the sensor, the working environment and installation method of the sensor are inevitably related to the measurement accuracy and service life of the sensor.

Its excellent performance and ultra-high cost performance have won the favor of a large number of users, and it also has rich experience in installation and application. In this issue, we will take stock of the key points that need to be paid attention to when installing the laser displacement sensor according to the object to be measured and the environment.

 

01 When there is obvious difference in material/color

 

When the material and color of the object to be measured are obviously different, please follow the method shown in the figure to make the connection between the light emitting axis and the light receiving axis parallel to the dividing line of the object to be measured, which can effectively reduce the measurement error.

 

02 When it is necessary to measure narrow guide grooves and recessed parts

 

When the object to be measured is surrounded by internal walls or is in the shape of a concave or guide groove, please install it as shown in the figure below. Do not allow the light emitting axis and light receiving axis to be blocked by the wall.

 

03 When the object under test is rotating

 

When measuring a rotating object, if the line connecting the light emitting axis and the light receiving axis is installed parallel to the rotating axis, the effects of up and down fluctuations, positional deviations, etc. of the rotating object can be avoided to the greatest extent.

 

04 There is a step difference in the measured object

 

Install the connection line between the light emitting axis and the light receiving axis parallel to the step edge to minimize the influence of the step edge.

 

05 When the object under test is rotating

 

When the sensor is installed too close to the wall, it will be affected by the reflected light from the wall, which will have a slight impact on the detection results. If it is unavoidable to install close to the wall, you can install it so that the connection between the light emitting axis and the light receiving axis is parallel to the wall as shown in the figure below. In addition, in order to reduce the reflection on the wall, you can also use black paint to eliminate gloss, which can also have a certain effect.

 

06 High temperature environment

 

1. Choose a large-range sensor: The closer to the heat source, the higher the temperature. Therefore, without affecting the installation and measurement accuracy requirements, please choose a large-range sensor for long-distance installation.

2. Air circulation cooling: When the temperature around the sensor is slightly higher than the specified ambient temperature, as shown in the figure, the temperature can be reduced to below the specified ambient temperature by allowing the air to flow quickly.

3. Use heat-insulating material for packaging: As shown below, please cover the sensor head with a heat-resistant box and transport air into the box to control the temperature within the ambient temperature range of the measuring instrument.

 

07 The object being measured is transparent

 

When measuring transparent objects, a regular reflection displacement sensor is used. When installed, it must be tilted at a certain angle so that the receiver can receive the reflected light that occurs due to regular reflection.

 

Since the margin for the tilt angle is 2 to 5° (depending on the model), you can check whether the measurement is stable by checking the received light waveform. When measuring the thickness of a transparent object, as shown in the figure on the right, the sensor receiver can normally receive reflected light from the surface and back

 

08 The object under test is black

 

When the sampling cycle is faster, the sampling time is shorter, resulting in less light received. Therefore, when measuring objects with low reflectivity (such as black rubber, etc.) or when measuring at high speed, you must check the received light waveform to confirm whether there is sufficient received light.

 

09 The measured object is a metal with high reflectivity

 

When measuring objects with high reflectivity (such as lustrous gold, etc.), the amount of light received can easily reach saturation when the laser intensity is strong. When you confirm that the received light intensity is in a saturated state by checking the received light waveform, you can reduce the laser intensity value or adjust the installation method of the sensor to reduce the received light intensity value.

 

10 Effect of strong light

 

When there is strong light influence from the external environment. For example, it will be affected when exposed to strong sunlight. In this case, interference from ambient light can be avoided by shielding.

 

11 Random reflection and stray light interference

 

Random reflection stray light refers to the interference light reflected into the receiver due to rough surfaces or surrounding walls. In this case, the interference of stray light can be improved by adjusting the installation method of the sensor.

 

12 Initial warm bleaching

 

When the sensor is first turned on and powered on, the temperature inside the sensor continues to rise, and during this period the measured value will also continue to change. Therefore, when using a displacement sensor, please confirm the sensor's warm-up time in advance and perform measurements after warm-up.
